yes, it is cold at my place - but, I am on top, not in the valley. Snowing today nearby - indeed, I have just put the fire on.
More for atmosphere as the heat pump can easily do the work - but, the fire is nice.
One problem which I have never solved with a house with a jaw dropping view is that - a wall fire doesn't work - because one wants to see the fire - but, one also wants to see the view.
ditto a centre fire doesn't work either - because if you want to see the view - then, your back must be to the fire.
There is no answer that I have ever found.
We have not spent any money on this house - because we either were going to have a town house as well (which is the current plan) - and in this case, this house will do as it is -- or we would renovate this house or replace it - so, any in between work is just a waste.
So - we do have plans drawn for renovation (but, they will probably never be used) - but, never solved the fireplace location.
And, when we get the town place - it will also have a stunning view - but, the same problem arises.
It's not a problem if you have 'half a view' - ie. a good view, but not a stunning view - because with a good view - you tend to look at it - but, it doesn't capture your eye all the time - whereas a stunning view - well, it is never out of your attention.
I just spent a few days at a mates place with a good view - over water --------- nice, but, only nice - not the sort of view where everyone who comes in to the room comments.
For places like that - fireplace placement is far easier.
