Niu, not sure that there'll be any real scale in those preso depictions.
I noticed when looking at it yesterday (after your prompt) that the positioning of the horizontal sections is very shallow, ie, very close to the top of the primary LLS.
My initial thought was that they're trying to keep the drainage area as far away as possible from the OWC...I meant to include this observation in yesterdays post.
Not sure that they can dodge faults in the structure, you're more likely to know you've got them after the problems start...although, if you get any healthy doses of lost circulation while drilling, you could suspect you might be intersecting them.
You are correct though in the shorter the production section, the less chance of intersecting a larger fault that could draw water earlier...the top of the reservoir also has less room for longer production sections.
Also, if they spread the production area right out, they can remove more oil without a big pressure differential occurring in a localised area, which could result in early water movement.
Just a few thoughts, and of course, imo.
