IMO the free download is to use us as guinea pigs reporting problems. There will be many upgrades and patches sent to us to download.
My W10 download took 1 hour. My first impression was that my computer was running much faster, like when it was new.
However its getting slower again. My favourite shooting game will not play, even trying compatability mode. The desktop gadgets are no more.
I am not a nerd, and W7 did everything I wanted, so I cannot really comment on the advantages. So I will go back to W7.
I've already made up my mind to buy an Apple-Mac next time. I've already got an Apple i-Pad so it will be great having the 2 interconnect. Going to be goodbye Micro Soft and Windows.
