I was actually thinking of asking the same thing myself.
I have heard that the rain around Moree/Gwydir Valley was fairly patchy and little fell into the dam catchments. I believe the Macintyre did a bit better though.
I have been told that there was an increase in planting against last year. Most farmers that planted should have had enough irrigation to take the crops through to Christmas, so the hope is that the rains created some free flow in the rivers to give them enough water to bring the crops home. There is probably only another 8 to 10 weeks till harvest of some of the crops, so not too much longer before we find out how the crops have fared. I doubt that anyone would have planted more on this rain, though I have seen it done before with a bumper crop being harvested, but everything went right that year.
The other plus for cotton is that due to the lower world production last year, the consumption was greater than production by about 4,000,000 bales, so the global surplus was reduced to about 11,000,000 bales. This should be favorable for the cotton prices in the future.
If all goes well with the crops, IMO, I would not be surprised if they announced a final div of around 5c. All in all, again just IMO, it is looking great for the NAM SP and I continue to hold and accumulate as able.
Again, as your question posed, are there any farmers out there that can advise us how the rains fell or if there were decent flows in the rivers to allow some pumping?
Mop.
