STO offered in the share-price a high level of operational leverage to rising oil prices.
Most other O&G companies weren't undervalued in the same way. Well except for AWE with its free claim on AAL but that didn't last long for me.
STO also offered scale and a great balance sheet, in an industry where small explorers are quite risky.
An interesting point you make is that my thesis never played out but I still did OK (not great) on this one. What is important is not being clever, it's being bloody minded and sticking to the few things that you can know for sure.
