I've struggled for a while to get some meaningful info on where reram player Crossbar is actually at. In the past there have been suggestions that Crossbar is trying to develop a new NAND flash alternative that could drive the next generation of SSDs and the like - and grand claims about Crossbar having achieved 1 terabyte storage on a chip the size of a postage stamp. That would sound like a potential challenger to WBT.
I'm pretty sure the claim of having achieved 1 terabyte has not happened. I think we'd be hearing about Crossbar a lot if it had. Crossbar's website makes out that a T series chip is available in densities up to 1 terabyte, but I see no evidence that this actually has been achieved.
The most up-to-date info I could find was in these two articles, the first from May 2018, the second from June 2018:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/12758/microsemi-licenses-crossbar-reram-nonvolatile-memory
Quotes from the company in those articles suggest there is something about Crossbar's technology that is actually NOT suitable for SSD storage. The company talks about Crossbar possibly making its way into SSD controller circuitry, but not the storage itself! To me, if that is what the company itself is looking at, it seems like Crossbar just must not be suitable for low cost, high volume storage applications.
It appears Crossbar is expecting to have its technology turning up in consumer products in 2019 - but it sounds like it will be in fairly niche, specialised embedded applications.
In short, it looks to me like Crossbar is not a contender in the same space as WBT. Interested to know if others with more knowledge of the underlying technologies might have compared the two and could provide their take.
