Let me just explain a little bit about share buyback for people who lacks of finanice background.

A share buy back is just that – it's when a company buys its own shares from the marketplace.

Share buy backs are usually carried out through one of two methods. Shareholders may be presented with an offer to submit some or all of their shares for acquisition by the company at a set price; or the company may buy its shares on the market over a period of time.

The company sees itself as its best investment opportunity.

You could think of a share buy back as a company “investing in itself”. In this way, a buy back can indicate that a company generates strong cash flow.

This week I've asked Carmel Fisher of Fisher Funds Management to explain what a share buy back means for shareholders.


The company has extra cash reserves over and above what is needed for growth and expansion.

In most cases, a company conducts a share buy back as a meaningful way of using extra cash. Companies have several choices in this situation: they could spend the money on research and development of new product areas; they could increase their next dividend; or they could pay a special dividend, for example.

In some respects, share buy backs and dividends are similar – both are ways in which a company can distribute some of its profit directly to its shareholders.
