The only thing have been able to find in history similar to bitcoins potential is  the effect of the Internal combustion engine on the oil market.
We are only at the   beginning of this chart. There is however a difference discovery and production from new oil fields held the oil  price down  Bitcoin is limited in supply and for reasons I have detailed elsewhere I do not believe altcoins will fill the gap.
