Tanesco Floats tender for new power turbine By Vicent Mnyanyika
The Tanzania National Electric Company (Tanesco) is in the final processes to float a tender for procurement of power turbines that will add 160MW to the national grid to avert impending power crisis.
In March this year, the minister for Energy and Minerals Mr William Ngeleja assured the nation that by the end of the year the government would buy a 150MW power plant with support from donor.
The Tanesco Communications Manager Ms Badra Masoud said yesterday that the firm was in the final stages of preparations of tender documents before the tender is floated on October or November this year.
"We are finalising preparation of tender documents, as we all know that it is a long process before it is finally a tender is advertised, when we are through, we will make it public," said Ms Badra.
She said the tender would involve the purchase of a 100MW plant for Dar es Salaam which will complement the 45MW Tegeta plant to be commissioned next month and a 60MW for Mwanza to carter for the Lake Victoria regions.
The Dar es Salaam plant will use gas and the mwanza plant will be run on heavy fuel, she clarified.
That has come at a time when Tanesco had already instituted power rationing in five regions in response to power shortage in the national grid.
