But true that book value for both STO and MRM at current aren't reliable. When that happen though, earnings and returns aren't reliable either. Much worst as a measure of the business value actually.
When a business is suffering a market downturn, its earns will of course deteriorate.
Is the deterioration permanent; is it so bad that the company cannot find work or otherwise pay its liabilities and go bankrupt before the cycle return.
Since I'm satisfy that it is unlikely to go broke, returns and higher margins will take care of itself once the cloud give way to all that carbon monoxide
