The Commonwealth Bank is set to explore use cases for forthcoming 5G cellular technology in its bank branches.CBA said in a statement the trials would run with Telstra and Ericsson and would focus on testing “edge computing uses cases and network capabilities.”“The trials are expected to showcase what the bank branch of the future might look like, and how 5G edge compute can help to reduce the network infrastructure currently required at individual bank branches,” Telstra said.“5G edge computing is expected to simplify the network operations and complexity required at individual bank branches.“This collaboration will explore optimal 5G coverage solutions and provide more flexibility for bank operations and locations.”ADVERTISINGCBA’s general manager of digital and retail operations and technology, Pete Steel, said the bank hoped 5G “can help us provide quicker and better digital experiences for our customers.”The partnership agreement was unveiled at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.Telstra used the event as a platform for announcements that it would carry exclusive 5G handsets from Samsung, LG and Oppo when they are commercially ready.The telco indicated last month that it would strike exclusive handset deals as all mobile operators prepare to launch next-generation mobile services.
