The many variables confronting IFN apply equally to all power generators like AGL or Origin. These are finite and a path through can be found.
Batteries to smooth frequency oscillation would not need to be big. From memory, the SA Hornsdale battery devotes ~10% of its capacity to this task. (please DYOR on this) Generators bid in half-hour blocks, so it is easy to multiply back the scale required if you want to.
Existing turbines are not redundant, they simply have a lower asset value. Their revenues are a factor of generation, not asset values. The new turbines are more efficient cos they are bigger and on taller towers, so the fan reaches higher where there is more wind movement. Retrofitting is not the answer as locals will object to the up-scale and the existing kit works fine. The larger taller windmills are less location-dependent, not reliant on ground-winds.
Future electricity generation looks to be solar + wind + batteries. This isn't environmentalism, it is economics. The cost of new wind is below the running cost of coal and gas, according to reneweconomy.com.au . Australia will never build new coal or gas power generators and new production from wind and solar are urgently needed. IFN has a substantial and growing installed base plus advanced projects. It should flourish under these circumstances, despite the interference of the Turnbull government, part of the rearguard action to protect the massive sunk investment in redundant coal and gas kit.
