THE investment community is confident that BHP Billiton's expansion plan for Port Hedland harbour will come to fruition, as the project cleared another hurdle yesterday.
Sceptics have doubted that BHP would bother spending the estimated $22 billion on building an ''outer harbour'' at Port Hedland when it could increase its port capacity by simply acquiring one of the junior iron ore exporters with access to the port.
Those suspicions have centred on the likes of Atlas Iron and Brockman Resources, which have port allocations at Port Hedland and have market values that are well within the reach of a global giant like BHP....."
