Id be surprised if it took 9 months, but it depends on what the end point of the study is and what sample size is required and the type of study that is being conducted. With a "non-inferiority" type trial (ie trying to show that the product is no worse off) the sample size needed for the study may be much less than if they were trying to show an X% boost in fertilisation rates for example.
