Hi: Depends which provider you are using. When I use IG Markets for SPI futures CFD's, they allow me to have a long and a short on the same product. When I open a short if I already have a long position, and I don't want to take out the long (cover the long), I place the short and hit the 'force open' button and end up with a long and a short position at the same time.
