Regarding the part where the company buys out the shareholdings under $500. I suspect that everybody will be able to buy up to $5K if they wish, and those people who then have less than the marketable parcel will be sold out, and they will receive their share of the proceeds of the combined sale, less expenses.
In the old days, which probably icludes now, people used to buy 1 share in a company so they could get annual reports, attend meetings, etc. Then the ASX changed the rules to require you to purchase a minimum of $500 in any transaction. Which then meant that you had to buy $500 worth of shares, and then sell all but 1 share, to achieve the same result. I noticed that Commsec is smart enough to work out if you are doing this, and prevents you from selling anything but your entire parcel, if it would otherwise create a small shareholding.
