If people don't have money for a new car, then they also won't be selling their old car. Wouldn't both happen at about the same time?
If people aren't selling their old car, then people won't be buying them 2nd hand. Though it could be that 2nd hand dealers would be running down stock, if more cars are being sold than coming in.
