To calculate this ratio
Step 1
Find out the company’s total debt
Total debt = short-term borrowing + Long-term debt + Current portion of long-term debt + Notes payable
Short term borrowings
Current portion of long term debt
Long term debt
Notes payable
Total debt
Step 2
Find out the company’s capital
Capital = Total debt + Equity
So add the total debt to total equity to find out how much capital a company has.

Step 3
Calculate the debt-to-capital ratio
Total debt / capital = Debt-to-capital ratio
