Cabora Bassa Special Grant 08/04

An area in extent of more than 550 000ha situated in the Zambezi Basin. Host rocks are primarily Karoo sediments hosting detrital organic materials that over geological time have evolved to natural gas. The basin is up to 10km at its deepest.

This basin was explored for oil by Mobil Oil between 1989 and 1994 during which a comprehensive seismic survey was conducted. The data collected gave a clear understanding of the geologic structure, traps, gas reservoir rocks, seal/cap rocks, source rocks, maturation migration and the hydrocarbon potential of the basin

The Cabora Bassa basin and its Mzarabani closure are estimated to have a reservoir capacity of in the order of 20 TCF (trillion cubic feet) of gas and 190 trillion cubic metres of condensate.

This basin requires confirmation drilling to test the above seismic model and drill sites have been targeted with an anticipated to borehole depth of between 3000- 6000m.
