The transition from lead petrol to unleaded petrol was not about inherently healthier fuel. It was about saturation of lead in ppm in suburbia. Unleaded has its own issues, and managing ppm of the bad stuff continues.

Therefore nuclear is the only way to reduce presently Co2 spewing coal/gas. Sure 20 odd million aussies can implement a 'feel good' response, but meaningless in global terms amongst billions of people and a rising middle class.
We have a choice between the certainty of Co2 continuing, or the advancement of safety systems in nuclear energy with possibilities of failure. Given China has certainty of 1.5million deaths from pollution per year, nuclear seems a fair option if with high standards.
