"Watpac says it has won a major works contract from Sirius Resources to build the tailings storage facility for the company's Nova nickel project near Balladonia.
Watpac managing director Martin Monro said the announcement was testament to the reputation for excellence the group's civil division had in WA.
"Watpac Civil and Mining has developed extremely strong credentials in WA in recent years and continues to build a healthy and diverse forward work book of projects," he said.
"The high standard of knowledge and skills the team bring to each project has ensured the strong perfomance of the Western Australian civil and national mining businesses over the past 12 months despite difficult market conditions."
Watpac Civil and Mining General Manager, Russell Hall said the five-month contract followed the recent award of a drill, blast and mining services contract with Hanking Gold at its Southern Cross operations.
About 70 people are expected to be employed under the contract.
Watpac did not disclose the value of the contract.
The contract award follows Sirius' announcement earlier this month that it had secured a $440 million project finance facility to develop the Nova project.
Shares in Watpac were off 1.5 cents, or 1.82 per cent, to 81 cents at 11am while Sirius shares were up six cents, or 2.43 per cent, to $2.53.
Construction is scheduled to begin in February and will include a fully-lined single above-ground impoundment with a surrounding 800,000 cubic metre embankment.
