    Thanks lucky.
I must admit i've been amazed by the response to just 3 topics and also heartened by the replies being almost totally constructive and congenial. Maybe it's because it's about everyday problems and gets us away from the heavy global stuff that seems to divide everyone into 2 camps and all the stupid point scoring that goes on?

You have a Rolls Royce water tank system. I can picture and understand exactly what you have thanks to your clear description and can see how and why it works. Well done for working it all out but even more for then doing it and proving the theories in a practical system. I'm assuming you have a gravity feed water supply to the house?

When I was in Tasmania on 17 acres I inherited a gravity feed system. Just a poly tank on a hill fed by an old[pre war] pump down by the spring[3 of them] fed soak that flowed at a constant rate and temperature throughout the year. I plugged in the power cable that went into the ground[with no conduit visible] and could then hear the old pump in the distance thumping away. I used binoculars to check the level in the tank by the external gauge or see when it was overflowing. That was after the first thrills of walking up that hill to check the level wore off.
When a pipe burst in an internal wall and blew the stud wall out I had no idea if there was a shut off valve near the house and ran to the tank and shut it off there but of course the long pipe still drained out. I found that valve later on near the chook pen. The handle snapped off in the closed position when I tested it so I had to replace it that day.
That water was good stuff but there was a corrugated water tank fed from the roof too that I cleaned out. It was truly disgusting! When it filled with the next rain it had too many leaks to count that all that thick gunk was sealing and I threw it out.
Looking back it all needed replacing but was like an adventure at the time, good fun but distressing too.
