I get the impression your pipes are coming off the shed, then underground,
then resurfacing at the tank? Is there any need to do that?
If the tank is close to the house, but a long way away from catchment,
move the tank back, and use hose from tank to house. No stagnant water in "u" bend,
bit of work, but cleaner water.

I'd recommend removing the down pipe that feeds the rainwater tank.
All 'rubbish' will dump at outlet to tank, and NO town water supply contamination.
Remove down pipe, and hose ALL gutters out.
Made from 20mm pvc fittings, around $10. People may have some fittings at home already.
I metre of straight pipe approx. 10 minutes to make.
Even a short person can use this without a ladder, etc.
