"The SAPTO means that a couple who has reached Age Pension age, can earn a ‘rebate income’ of up to $28,974 each ($57,948 combined) for the 2018/2019 year or for the 2017/2018 year without paying income tax, subject to certain conditions."

As Capital Gains on assets held for more than 12 months are eligible for a 50% discount, you could take $57,948 (discounted to $28,974 on your tax return) if you are single or the shares are in your name only. If you have a partner and your shares are split or in joint ownership, this tax free limit could double. You will need to allow for any income you have other than the Capital Gains.
