Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President (Vice President) M Jusuf Kalla welcomed the development of an Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, Energy World Corporation (EWC) Ltd in Sengkang, South Sulawesi.

After being received by Vice President Jusuf Kalla at his office, Jakarta, Thursday, EWC ltd's CEO Stewart Elliott told reporters, he conveyed the latest information about the development of EWC investment projects in the field of LNG development.

According to him, the project has been completed 90 percent. The project will supply LNG to power plants throughout the Sulawesi region and parts of Eastern Indonesia.

The use of liquefied natural gas as an energy source for electricity generation is far more conservative than the use of petroleum or diesel. Thus, the cost of electricity production can be reduced, so that it can reduce electricity tariffs in the community, he said.

Currently, according to Elliott, most of the energy sources of electricity generation in Indonesia are still using diesel which is worth 25 US dollars per KWH. While using LNG, costs can be reduced to only 5 cents per KWH.

Meanwhile, the Vice President welcomed the development. At present the world oil price is still in the range of 70 US dollars per barrel.

"So we have to shift to cheaper energy sources, in this case LNG," the vice president was quoted from the vice president's website.

Now, Sulawesi itself is developing a source of electricity generation from wind and water energy. The hope is that production costs on Sulawesi Island can be reduced.
