WEST Australian Premier Colin Barnett has vowed that the $30 billion Browse liquefied natural gas hub will be built at James Price Point in the Kimberley.
The greenfields site is slated for processing of Browse Basin LNG by Woodside Petroleum and its joint-venture partners. However, it is believed that most of the partners - which include BHP Billiton, Royal Dutch Shell and BP - would prefer to pump the gas 900 kilometres to Woodside's existing North West Shelf facilities in the Pilbara.
When Woodside sold a $2 billion piece of its 45 per cent stake in Browse to a Japanese partnership between Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui earlier this week, reports emerged that Mitsubishi was also in favour of the Pilbara option. Advertisement: Story continues below
Speculation of a change in plans for the project was quashed by Woodside chief executive Peter Coleman at the company's annual meeting on Wednesday when he told reporters the company would not consider alternatives to James Price Point until the deadline for its final investment decision in the first half of next year.
However, Mr Barnett said that under the State Agreement Acts, the verdict on the project was a matter for the WA government, not the project's investors.
''The decision as to where the gas goes lies with the West Australian government because of the Agreement Acts that cover both James Price Point and the North West Shelf project,'' Mr Barnett said.
''It's not a private decision, it's a government decision.''
