    ============
    Monday, August 29, 2005 1:26 PM

    This is the forty-fourth in the continuing series of groundwater updates. The next update is due 9/9/05
    This report covers the data received through August 19, 2005 and the field activities through August 26, 2005. 27 sample results were received from 25 home wells during this period
    There has been no exceedences of the sulfate secondary MCL (250 PPM) since the last update. The sulfate levels in 3 of the samples exceeded the screening level of 50 PPM, 2 of these results exceeded 100 PPM. All of the sulfate results are generally consistent with the previous sampling. With respect to the metals with secondary MCLs, two samples exceeded only the iron standard (300 PPB), four samples exceeded both the iron and manganese standard (50 PPB), and one sample exceeded the iron, manganese and aluminum standards (200 PPB). These results are generally consistent with the previous analysis. Finally, with respect to lead, which has a primary MCL and is discussed separately, four samples exceeded the lead standard (5 PPB). One of these results was from a well that had previously not exceeded the standard. The homeowner has a treatment system and that will be sampled to assure there is no potential exposure. Three post-treatment samples collected showed that the residential treatment systems were working.
    There are now seven homeowners that have met the criteria to be supplied with an alternative water supply. Three wells serving four homes have met the criteria to be considered for water treatment. One of these wells had a pre-existing treatment system, so it will be monitored, but a new treatment system is not planned. The treatment systems have been installed at the other three homes and are operating. The other four homeowners are also being supplied bottled water.
    We continue to discuss the home well results and monitoring plan revisions on a regular basis. The precipitation based sampling, turbidity based sampling, and treatment system sampling protocols continue to be implemented.
    The bauxsol pilot test work plan received on June 29. Along with Bauxsol application methods this work plan, along with a separate monitoring plan, discusses both monitoring well and lysimeter placement and sampling. The work plan was approved on July 19. A temporary water line was run from the Trumbull wells to the Buttress/Bifurcation area to supply water to the mix plant. The mix plant then mixes a bauxsol slurry that is pumped to the area of concern and applied. The first application of bauxsol began August 18 with application to the limestone blanket behind the Buttress/Bifurcation. The spray irrigation system is also in place. Drilling of the horizontal wells began on August 19. Through noon of 8/25 approximately 20,000 gallons of bauxsol had been applied to the Buttress, primarily into the limestone blanket, although a limited amount was sent through the spray irrigation system. A set of 17 monitoring wells are being monitored daily for changes in pH, conductivity, and water level as a result of the bauxsol application. To date no changes in the groundwater quality in these wells have been detected. On 8/24 application of bauxsol with a hydromulcher was also approved by the Department. The hydromulcher has not been used yet.
    Additional evaluation of the groundwater in the vicinity of the Arbogast fill is being planned. This is also in the area where the new disposal location under the driveway was discovered. A private property owner adjacent to the I-99 project was contacted about installing a well on his land.
    The monitoring wells were sampled the weeks of July 18 and August 2. The results from the July 18 sampling of the monitoring wells have been received and they are currently being reviewed. To date 68 OBAs have been drilled and 81 monitoring wells have been installed in and around the various fills.
    As usual let me know if you have any questions.
