Toyota's earlier hybrids used Nickel Metal Hydride batteries. They only started offering Li Ion on last generation's Prius plug in hybrid. The new model Prius makes do with NiMH on the base model and Li Ion on the rest. They are starting from a low usage base so expect big demand going forward.
