Public opinion is divided so rather than lose voters the liberals have said they will allow on a case by case basis rather than coming out and saying yes to all drilling, or no to all drilling. Smart move if you don't want to lose seats.
That said if LKO had the right to drill and this is confirmed in the judged ruling, rather than pay massive compensation you could see a liberal government reaching a settlement for allowing onshore drilling by LKO as a means of settlement.
They haven't published a manifesto for the election and so this position stated last year could change
