Vodafone I think have said they will enter the fixed NBN market place in July.
Long term I think it's the right move, creating fixed/mobile bundles creates stickiness to the carrier.
NBN is very competitive however, Carriers are burning money on the initial sale and it is taking considerable time to earn that back.
I suspect NBN sales will not provide a return for 2-3 years but it may stop people from churning, attract more customers, and increase ARPU per mobile service. NBN will be a 3-5 year project, and will chew more money in the first 12-24 months.
I am not sure how they will account for acquisition costs.. If the acquisition costs are booked as they occur it will create a black hole. I believe carriers can spread their acquisition costs over 12 months from the start of the contract. If they can it won't look so bad..
Meanwhile there is a movement to expose carriers that are failing to provide adequate backhaul on NBN.
Many people are complaining of slower speeds on NBN than their ADSL. The problem lies with carrier who is failing to supply enough backhaul out of the exchange.. Not all carriers are equal.. The budget carriers it should be no surprise are the biggest offenders.
On current NBN wholesale pricing if someone sells you a 100meg connection, and they are assuming a 10:1 contention ratio... ie: they have reserved 10meg per user, but if every user used their internet flat out they would get 10meg not 100meg.
The cost to the carriers for such a service is $213... but they are selling their unlimited plans for a lot less than that.. Rumours of contention ratios of 50:1 or higher definitely hold weight... As data volumes increase by approximately 50% per year one wonders where it will leave some carriers with their all you can eat plans in 2-3 years from now.. NBN is not a cash cow which is why I suspect Vodafone have stayed out of it for so long. If Vodafone have a brain.... and I think they do.... they will not be a price/value leader, which would mean lack lustre uptake.. Not that that is necessarily bad... it may we'll be wise to send the budget seekers to TPG
