Whilst Virgin Blue?s proposed alliance with Air New Zealand hangs in the balance, Star Alliance is attempting to woo the low cost carrier into its ranks.
Both Air New Zealand and Virgin Blue are awaiting the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission?s (ACCC) decision in regards to the joint venture.
According to Air Transport World, Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht said the group?s numbers in Australia were ?lacking.?
?We have to look [to Virgin]? as Australia?s ?white spot,? he said.
If the airline was to come on-board and join the alliance this would fulfill its minimum requirements as the carrier is set to establish a business (class) model on its medium-haul fleet.
Virgin Blue, CEO, John Borghetti was keen to explore all options available.
?There's a chance for Virgin Blue to look at everything.
?We've got a lot on at the moment and we're evaluating everything, and I mean everything, and certainly as we go forward we'll see where that leads,? he said. Mr Albrecht said Star Alliance would seek members from Russia and Africa next.
