France Telecom division, Orange Business Services has delivered super VoIP capacity, collaborative work systems and global network infrastructure, increasing network capacity ten-fold without a cost increase for medical device maker.
ResMed, initially founded in Sydney but now listed on both the ASX and NYSE, has over 2,000 employees and a presence in 67 countries. The A$600 million plus company is a world-leader in medical device manufacturing and was Australian Australian Exporter of the Year in 2006.
The company chose Orange Business Services to consolidate its global network onto a single infrastructure connecting its regional headquarters, branches and affiliates in more than 20 countries.
The three-year contract is valued in the millions and brings all of ResMed's Internet connections through hubs in Asia Pacific (Sydney), Europe (Munich) and America (San Diego) with capacities up to 50Mbps at each site. There are eight other major sites and over 30 smaller sites across the globe.
Orange Business Services Managing Director for Australia, Ian McCallum, explained that ResMed is one of the most dynamic manufacturing exporters with ambitious growth targets: "Orange gives ResMed the capacity to bring new businesses into a robust infrastructure continuously without disruption or downtime and provides the cost benefits of convergence by combining data and voice onto a single network".
According to ResMed's Director of Architecture, Shane Finn, with all offices linking seamlessly via the Orange network, more than 90 percent of ResMed employees will have a minimum 6Mb connection to the Virtual Private Network, increasing to 20Mb at the mission-critical sites.
"As a global business, it's essential our cross-functional teams are able to collaborate effectively across geographic borders," said Finn. "Research data, graphics, CAD diagrams and ResMed's global Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning system are used in all areas of the business, so a high capacity VPN is crucial.
"Our vision is to provide enough network capacity to explore new IT opportunities as well as improving the services and Service Level Agreement to the business," said Finn.
With the majority of the new network in place, the next stage of the projects to help ResMed leverage its IP Telephony systems by carrying voice traffic between sites. This phase will improve teleconferencing and online collaborative work systems.
"In addition, Orange will be providing dedicated help-desk service, a customer service manager and a lifecycle program manager to ensure that all ResMed systems are managed to their optimum load," said McCallum.
