MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT OPENS NEW DISCOVERY CENTRE
Minister for Transport Lynne Kosky today urged Victorians to visit the new myki discovery centre which she officially opened this morning at Southern Cross Station.
“The opening of the myki discovery centre supports an extensive community education campaign that will prepare Victorians for the transition to myki when roll out begins later in 2007,” Ms Kosky said.
myki is the new smartcard ticketing solution for Victoria’s Public Transport network and will replace the current metropolitan ticketing system, Metcard, as well as V/Line tickets for trains and coaches, and ticketing systems on major bus lines in Traralgon, Moe, Morwell, Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo.
Ms Kosky said the transition from the current Metcard system to the new technology would be challenging but the Government was focussed on delivering a high-quality ticketing solution that was both convenient and easy to use.
“We need to ensure all Victorians know how myki works and how they can make the most of its many benefits,” she said.
“Southern Cross Station services over 55,000 metropolitan and regional customers each day and is strategically positioned to capture a wide and varying customer audience”.
Ms. Kosky invited all Victorians to discover myki for themselves at the myki discovery centre at Southern Cross Station or to visit the mobile myki discovery centre which is currently touring regional Victoria.
“The state-of-the-art discovery centres cater to the learning needs of all Victorians and educate through a series of interactive, visual, auditory and tactile activities including staff demonstrations, DVD displays and interactive learning experiences.
“myki is a stored value card that is valid for use on trains, trams, bus and regional bus services throughout Victoria and will make using Victoria’s public transport network a faster, simpler and an easier way to travel for customers.
“The discovery centre demonstrates to commuters how they scan on and scan off with myki money for best fare at myki scanners, how they can top up the value on their myki, and how to check the remaining balance on their card”.
The myki discovery centre at Southern Cross Station opens to the public from Friday, 9th March.
