I think it might be more appropriate to characterise Li Ion batteries as "nickel cobalt" batteries. Yes, Li is a key component of the chemistry, but the proporion of Nickel particularly his higher.
to my mind Va redox is more appropriate for fixed installations (and they basically do not wear out) where size is generally less of an issue (unless one lives in an apartment) and Li Ion for mobile applications where energy density, and thus size and weight, is more of an issue
