that's what renewables are for - smoothing the peaks and troughs...i dont think we'll see industry and cities powered by renewables in my lifetime or even that of my grandchildren...the 'fossil fuel' power generations companies are the ones that will transition to renewable..it's not head in the sand it's about efficiency, practicality, cost effectiveness...but most importantly the all mighty dollar...it's what makes the world go round and forums like this - see hagetaka's point on dogma and greenies, i'll add geny Y and hipsters in with that lot...lovely ideals unfortunately in the real world it isn't as simple as just turning all the lights out..let them be the first to switch off the AC in summer, stop charging their iphones, taking selfies, watching netflix, drinking take-away coffees etc...
