Yes, i agree Van Eck will probably just switch a certain amount of shares from GDXJ into GDX, when NST will be considered too big for being a ""junior" gold miner. In any case i think the more important factor will be the inflows/outflows into gold mining companies/ETFs in general.
This sector has gone through some hard times recently (NST is quite a positive exception) and there are some signs, that general sentiment could be shifting away from the stock market darlings of the past years, the tech sector ( i.e. Apple,Google,Facebook,Amazon,etc) towards anything which has more of a "safe haven" status, gold (and the miners) would be an obvious beneficiary.
