In Britain a wariness of the DTP from the anti vaccination lobby simultaneously followed the Japanese incidents, along with an absence of mandate to get vaccinated, which resulted in a similar outcome of dramatically increased deaths from whooping cough over the same period.

So we have the initial death of 2 children out of how many hundred thousand to millions of doses given due to reaction to the DTP, to hundreds of deaths from TWO outbreaks of whooping cough (children) in unvaccinated populations, let alone the non-lethal adult victims.

No death is acceptable, but as a straight numbers game, the consequences of these historical events MUST have merit. Two instances of EXACTLY what the anti-vaxers are proposing, causing outbreaks. Choose the lesser evil.

Maybe, just like many bacteria, the Bordetella pertussis bacteria IS evolving? Maybe the US incident in your article IS the first of a "new strain"? These are well known and accepted theories by the scientific community, and it wouldn't surprise me to find that someone, somewhere, is working with the newly identified strain.

As for DTaP - you wanted a watered down vaccination, and you got it. Please don't complain about the effectiveness. (homeopathic approach right there for you.....)
