US Wheat Associates want the Single Desk removed for one reason. They are sick of the AWB undercutting them to achieve sales in contested markets. Lets face it, this is only wheat we are talking about and of course it all comes down to price! There is no doubt Australia produces the best quality wheat in the world. This is purely because of our hot and dry harvest conditions whereas the Northern Hemisphere is harvesting high moisture crops which are always hard to keep stain free. However if quality was such a desirable trait why does the bulk of our commodity go to third world countries? ie Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan. Carbohydrates is a mugs market. We should be focusing on oilseeds which carry more inherent value and can be marketed in more affluent markets. Only problem is we don't have a decent oilseed. Canola is a big energy guzzler! We need an oilseed that is a legume, ie soybean in the Americas.
