US to partner with Australia, Papua New Guinea on Manus Island naval base, page-9

Australia is not alone in the Pacific it has the US, Japan and Sth Korea and others. Australia being in the Pacific region and tradition close ties with PNG should be the country spearheading a an economic push into these countries. For too long we have done very little, thanks to China we are now waking up to the possibilities. I think a Naval base on Manus will be good for the area and will be another peg to stability in the region.

Australia also has reasonably close ties with Singapore. Our ADF has been conducting military exercises with Singapore for decades and trains Singapore military pilots to fly helicopters.
