As if the "project" didn't originate in the Pentagon. Protect the "sovereignty" of Pacific Island nations, like the US protects the "sovereignty' of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran and every central and south american country.

"Mr Pence again accused Beijing of using debt-trap diplomacy to coerce small nations."

Oh yes its a well known fact that China recently invented debt trap diplomacy, which didn't exist previously.
