Cr Bourke said where a farm could have once employed 15 workers, with the new GPS and automated equipment that can operate on its own; many properties only needed up to five workers.
“Technology has gone against us in that instance,” he said.
“Industry is a sought after thing for us, perhaps it might be coal mining.”
The mining project in Oaklands, about 30 kilometres from Urana, is expected to begin in 2013 and could run for up to 50 years.
It has been predicted the venture could create close to 2500 jobs in its start-up phase and 600 long-term jobs when production starts – a population boost which would benefit the region’s service and retail sector.
