Considering the 1000 to be a constant (scaling factor, call it what you will and I agree it is a factor without units) gives you a measure whose units are $ squared per oz squared and not $/oz. Once you recognise that AISC = Overall Mining Cost / Production, then the make-up of the measure becomes more apparent.
