Sierra, this comment & link to the UNSW achievement is the glaring flaw in your position. I applaud the UNSW efforts & support their further work. Your comment is obviously provocative but why would anyone see that as bad news?
You seem to want all coal mines shut today whereas most other posters simply want a measured & economic transition to clean, renewable, affordable energy that is also balanced to people's needs.
If this means that India needs new coal fired (new; more efficient) power for the next say 20 or 30 years to tackle their horrendous living conditions, would you grant them that benefit or make them wait? Many articles (including Renew Economy) seem to have 2040-2050 as a minimum for winding down coal sourced power.
