If you read about HFT and algo trading in some articles on the web you sometimes come across reading about certain exchanges paying the institution a portion of their trade as a refund if you like for being a liquidity provider. Dare say that's whats happening. Just buying and selling, not necessarily making money on the trade, but making money on the rebate from the exchange. The rebates vary but my guess is its only a couple cents here or there but it all adds up when algos and HFT start pumping volume through.
I am however not sure if the ASX does this but I know it happens a lot in the US
