Some people mistake speculative news items as business disruptors.  Even as they are being reported, observers note that it could be years before those technologies are enacted.  Drone deliveries, driverless trucks, etc, fit into that category.


In contrast, " A disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network (over a few years or decades), displacing an earlier technology." (Wikapedia definition).  There is little doubt uber is doing this, as it's out there and challenging the status quo.  The real question is whether uber will become a sustaining innovation.  It will if it drives current taxi businesses to adopt part or all of uber's business model.

Drone pizza delivery will become disruptors if and when they're enacted, not if they stay in the lab.  However, closing your eyes to the possibilities is not a good investment strategy.
