I was recently fortunate enough to tour a global manufacturing company contracted to fabricate the titanium spars on an aircraft tailwing (being vague here deliberately). It was interesting to observe the automated machining process taking place - think massive 5 axis milling machines - and also hear from the production engineer that 90% of the material is machined away from a solid billet. Think material expense and time lost.
This isn't new information - in fact TTT have used this scenario as the primary reason for why they think cold spray titanium has a market, especially in defence. It was just great to personally witness this scenario taking place in reality to reinforce what the potential market is for TTT, and something I thought worth sharing. Market is not an issue folks. Working through compliance and certification will be the challenge, but it will be a matter of time IMO for cold spray generally and TTT is well placed at the front of the pack to achieve this.
