The problem is that "market cap" is not complete without further investigation. I would rather have 50 mill shares @$2= $100 mill, than 1000 mill shares @10 cents=$100 mill.
The first one can indicate a possible scarcity of scrip with a corresponding maintenance of prices. Of course, one can have too few shares as well.
One can reduce the 1000 mill shares to 50 mill; chances are that the final price could be less than the first quoted 50 mill. Thus there is risk doing that.
