The following are excerpts from the “Sky & Space Global Presentation”, made public 14th Jan this year.
It makes for a very good ‘re-read’.
- Over 4 billion people currently without ANY mobile coverage.
- -retail customers via deals with Global Telcos, especially attractive in remote or underdeveloped areas, with significant rate reductions
- Latin American, Asian and African regions with poor coverage
- Current market is US$5bn for of mobile satellite comms devices (excluding TV)
- Market forecast to grow +$10bn by 2021
…………………….. and today we are in a trading halt pending details to be released about “a material agreement with an offshore telecommunications company.”
For my money, based on the snippets above, there is a deal on the SSG table with a telco presumably in either Latin America, Asia or Africa. Looking closer, at above point #2 they stipulate “… remote or underdeveloped areas, with significant rate reductions”, I reckon Africa fits the bill more so than Latin America and Asia.
Yes, I reckon there is a telco in Africa, hell bent on maximizing SSG technology to make huge inroads into the African market where mobile use is growing exponentially not just for call and date but also for making ‘payments’ for goods & services....
