There appears to be extensive history on the Health Department's attempts to cap the intravitreal injection procedure along with the related drugs. The procedure is said to be the second most common procedure following cataract surgery. There was some $26m spent in 2009 in Medicare benefits on it, and a lot more for the related drugs. It is understood the Dept believes it can be more simply administered to patients and there has been some abuse by ophthalmologists in overuse of the 42740 medicare benefits schedule. The industry was successful in removing planned caps on the procedure in 2010, which was part of the cataract cut back debate at the time. If there is any good news here, it is that he Ebit reduction impact may not occur as easily as planned by the government, particularly given vocal elderly who benefit from it etc.
