The below table summaries a comparison between the August and October top 20 holders of Quest. In general terms there has been little change with two notable exceptions.

A larger version of the image can be found at the conclusion of this post:

Below is some more detail on the top 5.

    AVIEMORE CAPITAL PTY LTD

Own 9% of Primary Gold (PGO)
    - Low volume gold explorer that seemed to take a massive 90% SP hit earlier in the year. Haven't gone into the detail as to why this happened. Volume is almost non-existent.
    - This company was previously Hydrotech that provided water regress systems. Lord knows how it suddenly became a Gold explorer. The ASX code change aligns with the SP drop listed above.

Own 8% of Cradle Resources (CXX)
    - Another Gold explorer however seemingly making more inroads than PGO. Share price is volitile but volume indicates a degree of interest. I believe Aviemore only brought into CXX last month so they clearly have cash to throw around.

Own 3.5% of VIL (now MEJ)
    - You may remember VIL from the Sidi Dhaher ADX vanishing oil debacle last year.

    Summary:

Difficult to get a solid read on these guys. I'm not familiar with the process for pulling company ownership data in AU as from what I can see you need to pay (not the case in NZ). Eitherway they are listed as a "Superannuation Trustee Proprietary Company" so I expect it's a high risk super play given the nature of the investments that I've outlined above. Aviemore taking the significant recent stake in CXX can be viewed in a positive light as it would appear that whoever is behind this fund is liquid and even with the VIL shambles are still willing in invest.

    LEXTON HOLDINGS PTY LTD

    Summary:

Looks like Lexton is Gus' investment vehicle (Non-exec chairman). Bit more info on Gus below (for those who are not familiar) ->

Mr. John Andrew Simpson, also known as Gus, has been the Non-Executive Chairman and Director of Quest Petroleum NL since November 24, 2011. Mr. Simpson serves as an Executive Chairman of Peninsula Energy Limited at Strata Energy, Inc. He serves as Non-Executive Chairman at Cady Energy Limited. Mr. Simpson has an extensive range of corporate and commercial experience. He serves as Executive Chairman of Peninsula Energy Limited. Mr. Simpson has over 20 years of experience in the management of listed and unlisted companies with international operations. He has over 20 years experience in the management of companies with international operations. Previously, he served as Executive Chairman of Etchell Capital Pty Ltd., Olea Australis Limited. Mr. Simpsin has been a Director of GRP Corporation Limited since July 6, 2011. He served as an Executive Director of Tanganyika Gold Limited and Panorama Resources NL. Mr Simpson is both a Science and Arts graduate from Curtin University, Western Australia.

    ZERO NOMINEES PTY LTD

    Summary:

Zero are a bit difficult to get a read on. Unlike Aviemore they are classed as a "Proprietary Company" so privately funded. However they seem to have a more diverse portfolio with their biggest holding a 9% stake in iiNet (an ISP based out of Perth). They also have a 2.6% in Cooper energy (COE), and a 1% holding in Drillsearch (DLS) that are both targeting the Cooper-Eromanga Basin (O&G) in Central Australia. They also have a minor stake in Indophil (IRN).

    MR RAYMOND JEPP

    Summary:

Picking this chap is a high net worth high risk investor given he also appears to have significant stakes in Tamaska (TMK) and Wildhorse Energy Limited (WHE). Both O&G explorers.

    ALBA CAPITAL PTY LTD

    Summary:

Listed as a real estate developer (?) based out of Sydney. They also have a stake in Cradle, in fact alot of the top 5 seem to have investments in the same companies, and Alba appear to be at least partly if not wholly owned by RBS.

This article gives a good overview of the relationship between Alba and RBS - (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/archive/business-old/rbs-builds-stake-in-construction/story-e6frg9gx-1111114986851)

I would like to go further down the top 20 list but the Internet connection here in Cambodia is so damn slow it would take me weeks.

So let's look at the two major movers (as highlighted in red and green in the comparison table above). Finance Associates who drop completely out of the top 20 and OLOF MAXWELL PETTERSON who increased his stake by 10M shares.

    Finance Associates PTY LTD

    Summary:

Thin pickings surround this apparent superfund. Although there is mention of such a company it must has/have run a very low profile. I'm emailed Anthony asking if he has any info sounding this previous top 20 holder.

    MR OLOF MAXWELL PETTERSON

Alas my search regarding the allusive Olof was fruitless. Natural suspicion is that he's a low profile investor who doesn't appear on the top 20 of any other ASX listed companies so is obviously bullish about Quest's prospects.

It is also worth noting that there are two other notable investors who fall into the "No Change" category; "Citicorp Nominees" who have significant holdings in all the big Aussie banks and is owned by "Citi Bank" and ditto for "HSBC CUSTODY NOMINEES" who also have a significant stake in all of the big four banks and are also owned by the obvious parent company "HSBC".

Hopefully the above information is of interest and I'm sure the likes of Bukka et al who may have some more on the ground intel will be able to add additional insights into the who's who of the top 20.
